Scammers are at it again, and they are targeting churchgoers. Maryville residents have been getting text messages and emails from what is supposed to be a pastor or church official asking for monetary donations in the form of gift cards. Maryville Public Safety officer, Ian Myers, says it's important to verify the scam is truly from your church before acting on it.
Myers noted, " If they receive a message, my ultimate goal is to have them contact their church or their parish, wherever the message supposedly came out through. We want them to verify the authenticity of the message, either through the pastor themselves or through the church office."
It only takes a minute or less to confirm with your pastor or church office if it's true or not. If you believe you have fallen victim to these scams, Myers recommend you contact Maryville Public Safety as soon as you can. The number for Maryville Public Safety is 660-562-3209.
