Special Session called by Governor Mike Kehoe is in consideration of the stadium incentive plan and a storm relief funding package
Last week, the Missouri Senate passed a storm relief funding package and a stadium incentive plan over to the House of Representatives for consideration. Lawmakers are in a Special Session called by Governor Mike Kehoe. The storm relief package brings 125 million dollars to the rebuilding effort, delivered through tax relief to victims and additional funding for the Missouri Housing Development Commission. Four storm events from this spring have been named by Govenror Kehoe as disasters; the most severe - a tornado in the St. Louis area - caused an estimated 1.6 billion dollars in damages and took five lives. The relief package was sent to the house with a bipartisan coalition of 23 voting in favor. 10 republican senators voted to oppose the bill. The stadium package, meanwhile, passed with 19 in favor and 13 opposed. It would allow tax collections from economic activity at the Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums to be redirected towards stadium projects and renovations for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Royals. The cost could come to 1.5 billion dollars over the next the next thirty years. Many lawmakers insist that losing the teams to Kansas would be a tremendous economic loss. The plan would cover about the cost of the stadium projects. Kansas has courted the teams with its own package, which would cover about 70 percent of new stadiums projects. The Kansas offer expires June 30th, giving the teams a short window to decide. The deadline has added a sense of urgency to the Special Session. The House is likely to act this week.
