The days are long, the heat is here, and the farmers' markets across our region are starting to fill with summer produce. KXCV-KRNW's Gavin McGough called up Manager of the Pony Express Farmer's Market in St Joseph, Beth Burchett to hear what's on offer.
Beth says, "On the first couple months from April till probably the middle of June, we have an average of maybe six vendors. Then as the produce starts coming in, we have more. I think we will have a total of ten vendors this year. Right now, we have some lettuces and radishes coming in, nice green onions." Gavin has seen a lot of vendors that are bringing tomato plants, flower pots, and the like for folks to take home to plant themselves. Beth replied, "Yes, at the beginning we have a few vendors that bring tomato plants, pepper plants, and it's kind of slowing down now. But I see a lot of people coming out wanting to start their own garden." This way, if your garden does not take off, you can still come back and get their veggies professionally grown from the farmers. She agreed and said, "Exactly, they know where to come."
Gavin inquired if there was anything coming up next for people to be excited about. Beth mentioned that some customers were waiting for the new potatoes and peas. Beth shared a memory of growing up on new potatoes and peas in a cream sauce.
You can catch it each week from 7 AM to 1 PM on Saturdays and Wednesdays at the East Hills Mall parking lot off Woodbine east of Dillard's, St. Joseph, MO.
