St. Joseph will move forward with long-range city improvements

City leaders in St Joseph are excited to be moving forward with long-range planning of city improvements and priorities. St. Joe conducted a resident survey earlier this spring and recieved the results, collected from more than 600 respondants. The survey asked questions ranging from satisfaction with city services to residents’ perceptions about their community, economic propsects and housing needs.
Responses identified improving the quality of police services, stricter enforcement of city codes and ordinances, and increasing communication with the public as priority areas for the city in the next two years. Residents repsonding to the survey tend to be satisfied with Fire and Park services.

On the infrastructure side, the availability of housing, particularly affordable options, and the overall appearance of the
community were concerns for many. Other comments focused on the need to address drug issues, homelessness, and street repairs.

City Manager Mike Schumacher is excited to have the results in hand. In a statement, he said, "We want to focus our efforts on the things our citizens actually care about, not on trying to guess what those priorities might be." He notes that department leaders on the city staff will draw future projects and direction from the survey results, and keep the public informed.

The City Council will meet at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, for a planning session to set goals and objectives for improvements based on the survey results.
