The Missouri Department of Conservation is having an exclusive buy back event

Handful of mulberries

The Missouri Department of Conservation is buying red mulberry and wild plum fruit in the Chillicothe area during these summer months. For $6 a pound the MDC will buy red mulberries from residents, and started on Monday.

During the month of July starting on the seventh, they will be collecting wild plum fruit for $1.95 per pound. For those wanting to harvest mulberry during this exclusive buy back event, the MDC recommends bringing in leaves from the bushes to make sure the mulberries are correct. When it comes to the wild plum, the MDC have specific requirements for the fruit before they will buy them. The fruit must be ripe with a red, orange or yellow color.

Members of the community who want to particpate can walk in during their business hours which is 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with an hour break for lunch.

Members can also call to schedule an appointment to bring in their fruit by calling 660-646-6122.
