The Kansas City Main Street extension project is coming to an end. The project that extended the main street streetcars by three and a half miles from Union Station connecting to UMKC is almost complete. The grand opening is October 24.
The process of the extension started all the way back in April 2017 when it was just in the planning stages. The total cost of the project, which is $352 million, was fully funded through federal and local funding. The project broke ground back in April of 2022, and three and a half years later it'll finally be open.
Starting in March of this year is when the massive repaving of the main street corridor started to take place to smooth the road that the streetcars were on. Contruction crews completely repaved with asphalt and redrew the pavement lines.
Starting last month in June, the final stages before grand opening began. The organization is currently working on federally mandated tests to make sure the streetcars are safe and ready for passengers ahead of October.
The grand opening event will be the morning of October 24th, and directly after, public passenger service will begin. There will be more information about the location of the event coming closer to the grand opening.
