Since 2020, 911 calls for emergency services in the Nodaway County region have all been managed by the Northwest Regional Communications Center.
Before the NRCC was created, the region's 911 system was long out of date. NRCC Director Jessica Rickabaugh provided an update on their services to the Maryville City Council this week. They work throughout the region, she says.
"Thirteen fire departments, three law, and then Nodaway County Ambulance, which also operates five rescue squads. So again, ever since we started this in 2019, we've tried to make it as seamless as possible for each of those agencies and our citizens, most importantly.", says Rickabaugh.
The council approved an agreement to continue support for the NRCC's work, which is supported by a countywide sales tax. Councilmembers did express some concerns about where funds would come from if sales tax collections do not keep up with NRCC needs. The agency is trying to build a funding cushion and have money set aside, Rickabaugh says.
"They've also discussed that they would also like to work towards building a cushion. We're also getting ready to hit the five year mark, so equipment is starting to get to where we need to keep it current. That's probably a discussion for the next couple months though.", informed Rickabaugh.
The NRCC is based out of the Maryville Public Safety Building on First Street. What infrastructure updates are coming up, and how much they'll cost, will become clear down the line.
