Following a recent trend in the region, the City of Rock Port is moving to develop rules around electric scooter use, including a ban on scooters after dark.
Electric scooters have become increasingly popular in city downtowns across the region amongst local kids in particular. Their increasing prevalence has raised concerns about safety for riders, pedestrians, and other traffic.
Rock Port Mayor JR Chaney said in a meeting earlier this month said that from discussions with city legal counsel, the issue is widespread.
"This is an issue in towns everywhere. Most towns ban them and I don't want to ban them. Kids love them, I get that.", says Mayor Chaney.
Scooters are already banned on the City’s Main Street, but citizens have voiced concerns that the rule is not followed. Chaney notes for behavior to change they will have to police scooter use more actively.
" I think this is one of those things where we're gonna have to just enforce it a few times, and then it finally gets out that we're serious and then it sets in. We're gonna have to give a few tickets, we're gonna have to let people know that the teeth are, are behind the ordinance on that.", explains Mayor Chaney.
The Alderman agreed to put a curfew in place banning scooters beginning half an hour after sunset until 6:00 AM in the morning. They have also asked legal counsel to develop a rule around helmet use.
The state of Missouri requires all towns have a helmet rule. They will vote on the rules at a future meeting.
