The Second Harvest Food Bank in St Joseph serves an eighteen county region in Northwest Missouri and Eastern Kansas.
It works with local food pantries to distribute food from the US Department of Agriculture, regional retail partners, and donors.
Harvest CEO Chad Higden says they have seen high demand for their resources this summer. "You know I think what you see right now is that when we show up with the mobile pantry and truck of food to deliver, we'll see three to four hundred cars even in rural areas."
Higden says the demand for food, and the pantry's access to resources, is always fluctuating: with seasons, economic shifts, and politcal changes.
The federal budget reconciliaiton process that wrapped up earlier month involved funding cuts to SNAP, the federal food insecurity program.
Higden says it's unclear what the impacts will be. "When you look at the future and things that are happening there are some things we have our eye on, and are monitering at the moment. It's not going to be felt immedietely. But really It's an honor for us just to be here because you never know what will dictate higher demand, higher need, that kind of thing."
What is important, says Higden, is that the bank is here and ready to help. "Our website is a great place to look. You can see our feeding schedule for kids. You can see our agency partner pantries. You can see our mobile pantry schedule. It's a great way to see what we have for your family if you're struggling right now."
