In an upstairs meeting room at the Maryville Community Center on Tuesday, residents and community leaders gathered for a collaborative work session to discuss the challenges they see facing their city.
Maryville is working on updating its comprehensive plan, which will chart the course for the next 20 years of city projects and initiatives.
RDG Planning and Design are the consultants on the project. Urban Planner, Megan Schott is based in their Des Moines office. She says they're hearing lots from the community through online surveys and these in-person events.
" It's one of the highest participations we see among the communities we work in this size, so I think that's really impressive."
Topics discussed this evening range from housing issues to neighborhood aesthetics to boosting business in the cities downtown. While a number of challenges facing the community are addressed, Schott says the city has a lot going for it.
"Initially, it's the community pride, the excitement and that that relationship with the university. You know, there's so many great services and amenities that are kind of blending all in a smaller town and atmosphere, and that's rare to see. So seeing that come together is cool."
Future workshops will happen this fall. Schott notes that they hope to reach student populations as well and hear the needs of commuters who work in Maryville but live elsewhere in the region.
