Late last week, the Missouri politician Billy Long was removed from his post leading the Internal Revenue Service and assigned by President Trump to be the US Ambassador to Iceland.

Long had a short tenure at the IRS -- he was approved by the senate less than two months ago.

Since Trump came into office, there have been significant staff cuts at the agency as part of the DOGE agenda. A new tax bill, meanwhile, is ushering in a new era for the service as it seeks to implement tax relief for tipped workers, a new child based tax credit, and the rollback of energy incentives.

Long represented Missouri in the US House from 2011 to 2023.

Scott Bessent, Secretary of the Treasury is serving as the acting IRS commissioner while a permanent replacement for Long is found.
