The Worth County Commission voted this week to begin using an additional Emergency Alert System, a text notification service called CodeRED. The new software will cost the county 15 hundred dollars a year. It will alert all phones in the county in the event of an emergency.
Currently, Worth County alerts residents of emergencies through Textcaster, a separate messaging service that residents must sign up for specifically. There are also warning sirens throughout the county.
County Emergency Manager Abby Hawk asked the County Commisison to add the CodeRED alerts to reach residents who cannot hear the sirens from their location, and who are not signed up for Textcaster.
According to the Newspaper the Sheridan Express, discussion around emergency management in Holt County increased after flooding claimed over a 100 lives in Texas earlier this summer. It appears poor emergency management systems may have contributed to fatalities during that event.
Other communities in the region are also examining their alert systems, including Gentry County, which is updating its emergency management plan this fall.
