The NCAA Division 2 Basketball season gets rolling Saturday and Sunday with the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph.

The weekend will feature area teams, as well as some of the best talent from across the country.

No. 5 Northwest Missouri State University will be featured in the classic, along with their 2017 title game opponent Fairmont State and the 2018 national championship teams, Northern State and Ferris State. Others on the schedule include No. 7 Queens (NC), a perennial power in Division 2, Missouri Western and William Jewell.

Prior to the games Saturday and Sunday, Small College Basketball will also induct its 2018 Hall of Fame Class Friday at the Stoney Creek Inn in St. Joseph at 6:30pm, featuring John Barnhill (Tennessee A&I), ML Carr (Guilford), Pat Douglass (Cal State Bakersfield), Philip Hutcheson (Lipscomb), Earl Jones (District of Columbia), Charles Oakley (Virginia Union), John Pierce (Lipscomb), Terry Porter (Wisconsin-Stevens Point), Leonard “Truck” Robinson (Tennessee State), Clarence Walker (Indiana State), Marvin Webster (Morgan State), John Wooden (Coach).

John McCarthy is the founder of Small College Basketball. He spoke with John Coffey about the induction ceremony and the classic, and sees it continuing to improve each year.

"I really believe that this is the finest in-season event in NCAA Division 2 Basketball on an annual basis," McCarthy said.
