Northwest battled with Emporia State Wednesday night at Bearcat Arena, but a strong start to the third quarter lifted the Hornets to a 54-41 win.

The Bearcats (6-8, 2-3 MIAA) were outscored 12-0 in the first five minutes of the second half and were never able to recover. Zoie Hayward completed a three-point play after getting fouled on a layup in the final minute of the third quarter, but ESU responded quickly as the fourth quarter began with a quick three-pointer from Jessica Wayne followed by a jumper from Addie Lackey to extend the lead to 14 points.

At halftime, Northwest had Emporia locked in a defensive slugfest, with a narrow 21-20 lead for the Hornets. The 'Cats limited them to 26-percent shooting and just 1-8 from three-point range in the opening half.

Northwest was led by Mallory McConkey in scoring with eight points and two rebounds. Jaelyn Haggard added seven points.

The Bearcats host Washburn Saturday at 1:30pm. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 1:10pm.
