Northwest battled Missouri Southern in an entertaining, back and forth game Saturday afternoon, but a buzzer beater sunk the 'Cats 61-58.
The Bearcats (7-13, 3-8 MIAA) were locked up with the Lions at 58 apiece with five seconds remaining. Missouri Southern senior Chelsey Henry took the in-bound pass in front of the visiting bench and made a three-pointer just as time expired to lift the Lions to the win.
Jaelyn Haggard sparked the Northwest offense with four three-point makes in the first half. Southern tried to keep the ball out of Haggard's hands in the second half, limiting her to six points on a pair of triples after halftime. The St. Joseph native finished the game with 18 points. In three career games against the Lions, Haggard is averaging 20 points per contest.
Northwest also out-rebounded Southern 39-36 thanks to a career-night from Mallory McConkey.
The sophomore hauled in 18 rebounds to go along with 14 points – both career-highs.
The Bearcats return to the road this week with only eight games remaining on the schedule. Northwest plays at Lindenwood Thursday evening at 5:30pm. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 5:10pm.
