Northwest Missouri State University made history Thursday evening with a 64-49 win over Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

The Bearcats (26-0, 16-0 MIAA) earned their sixth consecutive MIAA regular season title, a mark unmatched in the league's 95 year history.

Over the last 75 years, Northwest has won the conference 11 times. Seven of those championship seasons came under current head coach Ben McCollum, who is in just his 10th season leading his alma mater.

The 'Cats held a narrow four-point lead at halftime, and began pulling away in the second half. Northwest outscored UCM 19-5 during a seven minute span to open up a 61-39 lead.

Freshman point guard Trevor Hudgins anchored the Northwest attack with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Ryan Welty scored 12 of his 14 points in the opening half. The Parkville, MO native is shooting 63-percent from three-point range over his last three games.

Diego Bernard finished with a full statline including 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

Northwest can earn the outright MIAA crown with a win over Southwest Baptist Saturday or a Washburn loss.

The Bearcats game in Bolivar on Saturday is set for 3:30pm. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 3:10pm.
