Northwest 66, Lincoln 69

Northwest Missouri State gave Lincoln all they could handle Thursday night, but the Bearcats fell just short in a 69-66 loss to start the the MIAA women's basketball schedule.

The Blue Tigers (7-0, 1-0 MIAA) opened up a 16-point lead in the third quarter, and led by 11 as the fourth quarter began, but the Bearcats (3-5, 0-1 MIAA) made a game of it.

Northwest scored the first six points of the final quarter to cut the deficit to five points. Lincoln pushed the advantage back to nine less than a minute later. Again the 'Cats pushed back with a three-pointer from Mallory McAndrews, and Mallory McConkey hit a layup followed by two more free throws on the next trip down the floor to trim Lincoln's lead to just two points.

The Blue Tigers scored seven straight points to balloon their lead to 69-60 with 1:48 remaining.

The Bearcats went to work with six straight free throws from McConkey, Kendey Eaton and Kaylani Maiava to bring the green and white back within three points.

Northwest got one final look at a potential game-tying three-pointer as the final seconds ticked off the clock, but it fell just short.

Jaelyn Haggard led Northwest in scoring with 14 points.

Eaton added 13 points and four assists, Maiava finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four steals, and McConkey reached double figures with 10 points and six rebounds.

Northwest is back home for the second conference game of the season Saturday. The Bearcats host Lindenwood at 1:30pm. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 1:10pm.
