Northwest Missouri State struggled to score Thursday evening, and dropped a defensive battle with Emporia State 52-42.
The Bearcats (10-11, 5-10 MIAA) held the Hornets to their second-lowest scoring output of the season, but it wasn't enough to come out on top.
ESU led by 10 early in the fourth quarter when Northwest went on an 11-3 run with contributions from Jayna Green, Caely Kesten, Kelsey Fields and Peyton Kelderman to cut the deficit to two points. The Hornets scored the final eight points of the game and shutout the Bearcats over the final 4:59 to earn the win.
Kelderman put up a team-high 11 points for Northwest.
Fields added eight points and 12 rebounds.
The Bearcats host Washburn Saturday at 1:30pm. The game can be heard on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9.
