The Northwest football team saw their season come to close in a hard fought battle with number one ranked Grand Valley State losing to the Lakers 13-8 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs in Allendale, Michigan.
The Bearcats took a brief 8-7 lead on a 25 yard field goal by Cole Lammel with 3:49 left in the game before Grand Valley came back with a 7-yard touchdown run from Tariq Reid to win it with 1:55 left in the game. The touchdown run was set up by a 52 yard reception of a Cade Peterson pass by wide receiver Jahdae Walker.
Bearcat head coach Rich Wright says his team missed on several opportunities to score in the game: "We needed to convert on our red zone opportunities. Today there were just too many points left out on the field. You can't allow a good football team like Grand Valley to stay in it. I felt like in the 2nd half, we actually started to wear them down. We were moving the ball well, and just couldn't find the end zone. It was difficulty but again, just proud of our kids and their effort."
The Bearcats close their season with a 10-3 record. Grand Valley improves to 12-0 and faces conference rival Ferris State next after the Bulldogs held on for a win over Pittsburg State.
