Northwest 31, Missouri Southern 24

The Northwest Missouri State Bearcat football team posted a 31-24 win over Missouri Southern in Joplin Thursday night to open up the 2023 campaign.

Northwest fell behind 14-0 and 17-7 early but came back to tie the game at 17 at the half and 24-24 at the end of the third quarter. Northwest mounted a 91-yard drive and took 8 minutes and 39 seconds off the clock in scoring the winning touchdown on a two yard run by Jay Harris to take their first lead with 2 minutes and 20 seconds left in the game. The Bearcats iced the win on an interception by Bearcat newcomer Jianni Angulo.

Bearcat head coach Rich Wright says he was impressed with how his team reacted to the early deficit.

Jay Harris led Northwest in rushing with 131 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Up next for Northwest is Emporia State Thursday evening at Bearcat Stadium.
