Northwest Missouri State fought to hang with No. 18 Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon, but the Mustangs had too many runs in them on the way to a 68-56 victory.
The Bearcats (1-4) limited the Mustangs to 4-23 shooting from beyond the arc, but 15 turnovers plagued Northwest. They also only reached the free throw line five times in the game.
Trailing late in the first half, the Bearcats used a 9-0 run that extended into the second half to climb back within a couple possessions, but SMSU reeled off nine straight points to open up a 14-point lead. Northwest cut it to six points with 4:10 remaining, but that's as close as they would get.
The Bearcats, playing in the Peacock Classic on the Upper Iowa campus in Fayette, IA, have one more non-conference game before returning home for Thanksgiving break. Northwest faces Concorida St. Paul at 1pm Sunday afternoon.
