Northwest Missouri State hung with Missouri Western Saturday afternoon, but came up just short in a 69-66 loss to their MIAA rival.
The Bearcats (10-11, 3-8 MIAA) were tied with the Griffons with 1:58 remaining in the game after a layup from Molly Hartnett, but Western hit three of four free throw attempts in the final two minutes and held on for their seventh straight win in the series.
Northwest took a 41-36 lead into halftime after shooting 75% (9-12) in the second quarter, outscoring Western 25-14 in the frame.
The Bearcats lost their leading scorer, Caely Kesten, with 6:19 left in the third quarter. Kesten suffered an ankle injury on defense and spent the rest of the game on the bench. She finished with 11 points.
Hartnett carried the load matching a career-high with 28 points. Lindsey Kelderman knocked down some big threes, including one that tied the contest 59-59 with 5:40 left in the fourth. Kelderman ended the day with nine points.
Missouri Western survived thanks to a 22-point day from Marie Sepp and Kassandra Caron making nine-of-12 free throws and finishing with 15 points.
