July 30, 2025MARYVILLE, Mo.
Change seems to be the theme around Northwest Missouri State football this off-season.
Change to the coaching staff, the offensive scheme, the way the team approaches daily workouts.
But one thing that remains consistent around the program is the man that will now be the primary voice on defense.
Chad Bostwick was elevated from co-defensive coordinator to the full-fledged DC that will also be calling plays for the unit this fall in addition to coaching the linebackers.
Bostwick played linebacker for Northwest from 2001 to 2004, then went into coaching. He worked on staff at the University of Central Missouri and Colorado School of Mines before returning to Maryville to join the Bearcat coaching staff in 2011.
"He's played it, he's lived it" senior linebacker Carter Edwards said of Bostwick. "He's going to bring the best out of everybody. Not just the linebackers, but the whole defense. I think it's going to be pretty special."
Year in and year out, the Northwest defense continues to be one of the top units in the MIAA. The Bearcats have led the league in total defense in nine of the last 10 seasons. Under Bostwick, the team has also produced 12 First Team All-MIAA linebackers in the last 13 years, including Edwards in 2024.
Despite the turnover within the staff and the prominence of the transfer portal in college athletics, Edwards' loyalty to the man that brought him to Maryville never wavered.
"With all of the coaching changes and stuff, I never thought about myself, where I could go," Edwards said. "I always kind of thought about people that helped me get here like Bostwick and Joe Quinlin. I remember Bostwick telling me when he was recruiting me that I'd look great in green. I told him when he got the (defensive play-calling role) that he's going to look good in that red hat."
"Coach Bostwick's my guy."
